'Amazing Race' Down to Final Three
The latest edition of "The Amazing Race" had its second-to-last leg Sunday and despite starting in a hole and generally making tons of mistakes, frat boys Dan and Andrew made it to the top three to compete for the $1 million prize. Joining them were frequent front runners Nick and Starr and Ken and Tina.
Which leaves one team as the odd ones out. Mother-Son Toni and Dallas got in a bind when Dallas made a major error and left his cash and his passport in a taxi. I talked with them about the mistake, the highlights of the Race experience and their thoughts on the remaining teams.
MSN: You guys were heartbreakers the other day, losing your wallets, your passports and basically everything.
Dallas: Hey, don't remind me of it.
Toni: It was pretty excruciating.
MSN: How did that even come to happen
Dallas: It got edited that I saw this cab going away and that was it. But what happened was we had to do microphone changes. Your microphone is actually around your waist. I was in one cab for about an hour going in circles. I didn't know where I was going. He didn't know where he was going. Finally, I was like, "You know what? Just drop me off. I'm going to take another cab." They did a microphone change right before I was getting out of the taxi. They undid my little fanny pack and that's how it got left in the cab. So I got out and it shows me seeing this cab going away. But I hopped in another cab for a while, and after I got out of the second cab and went to pay the second cab driver, that's when I realized I didn't have my actual bag with the passport and money in it.
MSN: So what could you have done at that point?
Dallas: At that point, the point when I actually had realized it, I had taken another cab for 20 to 30 minutes so I didn't even know where that other cab had been. Obviously, Moscow is a huge place. The other thing about Moscow is taxis aren't official taxis. Anybody you flag down is a taxi. So it can be anybody driving any car. I obviously couldn't track the guy down by his license plate or by what cab company he was with because it was any random person. That's what the killer was. It was just a bunch of bad misfortunes all in a row.
MSN: So how did you get your stuff back, or did you?
Toni: We ended up getting Dallas' passport. I already had my passport, because when we got separated at the Roadblock, I took mine. Our clue told us he needed to have a passport and the money with him, so I handed everything over to him. We just kept hoping against hope that we'd get it back, that someone would turn it in or we'd have to contact the embassy or the hotel or something and they'd track it back somehow. But somebody did eventually turn it into the Embassy the next day so we were able to get it the next day and then head back out. So we were very fortunate.
MSN: Are you worried about identity fraud with it having been out of your possession for so long?
Toni: We hadn't so far, but now that you brought it up.. [Laughs]
Dallas: I'm kind of scared because there might be another Dallas walking around.
MSN: So what was the best part of being on "The Amazing Race" for the both of you?
Toni: For me, the ability to race with my son. I think that's what people saw. ... To travel with him as an adult on an even playing field. It wasn't all that even because he can run faster and he's far more athletic than I am. But that was a phenomenal opportunity. To do it in all of these different countries and to meet all these different people, go places we never would have traveled to ourselves and having the opportunity to do that and see how people live, that was just incredible for us.
Dallas: I think it was really cool to go places. I never would have seen Cambodia if it wasn't for the show. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been in my life. I've been to a lot of different countries and that's by far the most beautiful and eye-opening experience I've had in my life. I'm really grateful for the places I've seen that I wouldn't have gotten to see if it wasn't for the show.
MSN: What new things did you learn about each other from being on "The Amazing Race?"
Toni: I learned my child, he sizes up situations very quickly and very accurately. He doesn't give up. He goes for it. I've always known that was a piece of his personality. But to see the decisions he made first hand, to watch them and to be able to trust them was pretty incredible. And to watch him as he reacted to the people of various countries, the kids in India, there was one point in India where I was giggling almost to the point of tears, watching him, this big painted Pied Piper with all these kids coming joining us, and running with us. To see that as a parent, it really touched my heart.
Dallas: It was really awesome. My mom never gave up through this and a lot of stuff was physically demanding. She never once gave up. There were plenty of times when she could have. A lot of the things, people who are 18, 19, 20, 21 wouldn't have the energy for but my mom still got all the stuff done. We made it really far. We were happy to make it on the show, but our biggest goal was to not get kicked off first. And we didn't get kicked off first. We made it further than we ever expected. It was great.
Toni: Well, further than Dallas expected. I told him I was going for the million.
MSN: On last night's show, one of the things I was wondering was, Toni, why didn't you do that Roadblock since it was puzzles. I was thinking it would be more up your alley.
Dallas: You are right.
Toni: We talked about this this morning. Throughout the whole race, we would just read the clue and whatever it said to us in the words of the clue we chose who would do it. Sometimes it wasn't the right thing. Dallas is a better painter. He should have painted in India, but it was creative, so I took it. So when we read this clue, it said, "Who can solve a mystery?" literally. I knew that was me. But we had such a long morning, and we'd been walking for hours and hours. To be honest, I just said, "Dallas, I need you to do this one this time," and he said, "OK." I almost turned around and walked away and thought, "That was kind of unfair of me to make him do that." Because I really do think it ought to have been my challenge. But to be honest, I don't know if I would have been able to do it though. With what it took to get to where we were going and the transportation, Dallas was incredibly ingenious in some of the ways he managed to find taxis to get where I was and I don't think I could have done that. The puzzle pieces I probably could have done better than Dallas but getting to meet up with each other, I probably could not have done better than Dallas.
MSN: So one of the things that happened unfortunately was that you were far enough behind that you didn't get to go to the mat location and Phil had to come find you. How was that? Did that make you sad that you didn't get to close things out?
Dallas: What we were doing a lot of these different things didn't go our way. When I met up with my mom, we took the subway because we didn't have enough money to take a cab. We thought we were going to have a 30 minute penalty like Mark and Bill had in Bolivia, and we accepted that. We took that as our fate, but at least we got there quicker. When we got there, they said, no, you have to go back. But we weren't allowed to take the subway back because you can't get on the subway after 3 p.m. with video cameras, and at that point it was 3:15. We had to walk for two hours back to where I first met up with my mom at the end of the roadblock and from there take a taxi back to the park and start that all over again. That whole part took us a few hours. At the point where we weren't allowed to take the subway, we were like, "Screw this. This isn't our fault that the producers decided to do the race that way. We've done everything in our power. We can't really do any more." And then we went as hard and as long as we could. We went through all the tasks we could get through by begging for money for everything. That kiwi we had to buy, we begged for money for that. The buses we had to take, we had to beg for money for that. It got to the point where we were just going to get it done. It was tough that Phil came out. Our mindset was we were going to keep going until we got it done. It was cold and it was dark. We were freezing. We hadn't eaten for about eight hours. But we didn't care. It was about finishing the goal, the task we started.
Toni: There was a piece of us that said, "OK, they're calling the race for us at this point because it's getting pretty hopeless, and we probably aren't being very good ambassadors for America by running around begging everywhere we're going, just begging and begging and begging. To some extent, it made sense. We didn't know how much more there was to go. Until we saw it last night, we had no idea how much we had been cut off from.
MSN: Obviously at this point, you know who won. But can you give us an appraisal of the three remaining teams, their strengths and weaknesses?
Dallas: Dan and Andrew are hilarious. Never ever count Dan and Andrew out. They can make all the mistakes in the world and still bumble their way to the top. Nick and Starr have dominated from the start and Ken and Tina, they've won as well. All the three teams remaining have in one way or another proven themselves, whether it's by a bunch of first places, by Kenny and Tina getting things done, with Tina saying what has to happen and Kenny following along, or Dan and Andrew just by luck of the draw. It's tough to look at and see who's going to win because everybody has an equal shot.
MSN: Dallas, am I detecting a little bitterness toward Dan and Andrew?
Dallas: No. Dan and Andrew, I love the guys. I talk to them all the time on the phone. I can't wait until the finale. We're all going to meet up in New York. They're funny guys. On the race, I loved to hang out with them. They're one of the teams I'm closest with. One of the nights in Brazil, we stayed in the jungle talking into the middle of the night. I really like them. The thing is, I feel great for them that they made it this far. They had a lot of lucky things going their way, but I couldn't be more happy for them.
MSN: Speaking of hooking up with other teams, how are things between you and Starr?
Toni: I love her. She's wonderful.
Dallas: We've been dating since we got back from the show, so we've been dating for about six months. Things have been going great. She's actually from my hometown, or close to there. We went to rival high schools and know all the same people and so it's been good getting to know her and we'll see where it goes.
MSN: OK, what's in the future for you and your mom?
Toni: I'm just back at work. The Race was a nice little break, but I've gone back to my regular day job (as a consultant).
Dallas: And I graduate from college in two weeks. I can't wait. Woo-hoo! College graduate, and on to the next chapter in life.
